Sound Insulation Testing - Further Information

Sound Insulation testing is required by Building Control for all new and refurbished residential buildings. Mach Testing have considerable experience in this area and have carried out a huge number of successful sound insulation tests. We offer Part E testing at a very competitive rate and can carry out the tests nationwide.

Our experience allows us to identify weaknesses in the construction enabling corrective measures to be implemented should any sound test fail. Mach Testing can also carry out early, investigative sound insulation testing. This involves carrying out acoustic tests on a set of rooms early on in the construction stage in order to spot any weaknesses as early as possible which could save a lot of money in corrective measures.

The method for measuring the field airborne sound insulation of building elements is given in BS EN ISO 140-4:1998. The method for measuring the field impact sound insulation of building elements is given in BS EN ISO 140-7:1998. Once the level difference or impact noise levels have been measured the result can be rated to give single number figures and adaptation terms in accordance with BS EN ISO 717.

The adopted standard for Approved Document E (ADE) of the Building Regulations (England and Wales), which came into force in 1st July 2003 stipulates:

“In the Secretary of State’s view the normal way of satisfying Requirements E1 will be to build separating walls, separating floors and stairs that have a separating function, together with associated flanking construction, in such a way that they achieve the sound insulation values for dwelling-houses and flats set out in Table 1a, and the values for rooms for residential purposes set out in Table 1b.”
